Professor Fang Tao from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, was invited to give an academic lecture to our faculty and students

       On the afternoon of April 7, 2023, the School of Public Finance and Public Administration held the 1st (81st) Public Management Forum in 2023 in Room 205 of the Finance and Taxation Building. Professor Fang Tao from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada was invited to give a lecture on the topic of "Labor Market Effects of China's Minimum Wage System". The lecture was hosted by Associate Professor Peng Shuhong, with the participation of Mr. He Fan and graduate students of Social Security. Before the lecture, President Zhang Zhongfang met with Professor Fang Tao and had a friendly exchange on international cooperation and other related issues.

         In his lecture, Prof. Fang Tao firstly recalled his life experience of studying and working in Canada as a young man, and introduced in detail the process of creating his doctoral dissertation at the University of Toronto, the main content composition, and the publication destination, etc. He then started from the classic paper of Card and Krueger (1994) on minimum wage research, and introduced the controversy between two David (David Card and Neumark) on the employment effects of the minimum wage system, and further reviews the current state of minimum wage research, introduces his and his co-workers' earlier work on the minimum wage system in China, and finally focuses on recent research on the labor market effects of the minimum wage system in China based on county-level minimum wage data and micro-individual survey data. Finally, he focuses on a recent study of the labor market effects of the Chinese minimum wage system based on county-level minimum wage data and micro-individual survey data.

        After the lecture, the students asked questions about the issues related to the research of minimum wage system and postgraduate study abroad, and Mr. Fang Tao affirmed the thinking and learning spirit of the students and answered the questions in detail with patience and care. Finally, Mr. Peng Shuhong encouraged the students to learn life experience and motivation from Mr. Fang Tao's study experience, learn the wisdom and methods of academic study from his academic research history, cherish their time in school, explore courageously and aggressively, do a good dissertation, and live a life without regret! The lecture lasted for two and a half hours, and the atmosphere was warm!
